Those decision-makers recognizing the urgency should grasp the chance afforded by the Brazilian-hosted climate summit this month to build a coalition of resolute states intent on push back against the environmental doubters.

Global Leadership Landscape

Many now view China – the most effective maker of solar, wind, battery and automotive electrification – as the global low-carbon powerhouse. But its domestic climate targets, recently presented to the United Nations, are lacking ambition and it is uncertain whether China is ready to embrace the role of environmental stewardship.

For it is opportunity to direct in a new way, not just by expanding state and business financing to prevent ever-rising floods, fires and droughts, but by focusing mitigation and adaptation policies on protecting and enhancing livelihoods now.

This varies from increasing the capacity to produce agriculture on the thousands of acres of arid soil to stopping the numerous annual casualties that severe heat now causes by tackling economic-based medical issues – intensified for example by natural disasters and contamination-related sicknesses – that result in eight million early deaths every year.
