A recent study indicates that patients who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People buying such medications need to be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts suggest the way of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle support.
