The Year 2026 Hailed as the Age of the Croaking Craze.

While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Considering a band of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are staking their claim.

A Legacy of Leaping

Croaking characters are anything but new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. But, their visibility has seemingly exploded in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are legitimate titles centered on frogs.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To grasp this phenomenon, I performed a deep dive into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's elevated place in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat apparent elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the trend in gaming appears uniquely pronounced.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Frankly, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs have inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities facilitate a wide array of innovative control schemes.

A number of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year yet.

Should these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we might just be on the verge of a true amphibian entertainment revival.
