Seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
