Our Premier Album of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Secures the Top Spot.

On the surface, this work could seem more like an arduous academic examination than a new pop album from an artist whose last hit was a collaboration with a global K-pop star. Divided into 4 distinct sections and performed in 13 tongues, we have a breathtaking orchestral-influenced opus exploring feminine mystery, religious transcendence, and physical transformation, frequently through the prism of various saintly figures. The end of a relationship—a theme treated with grounded openness elsewhere—is launched heavenward here, supported by the constant presence of a major orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer within an extensive list of contributors. Its sheer audacity by itself renders the work of other pop stars seem rather laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

That this album succeeds in avoid dry intellectual posturing feels almost a miracle, and sole praise going to the artist. While this is not her first project to alchemize historical sounds with modern styles, the stakes are far greater on Lux, with the tightrope walk more dramatic. The element that truly elevates her fourth album, beyond its multilayered tunes, dense compositions, and inherent theatricality, proves to be a core sense of joy. Similar to the iconic artist during her peak, you find a captivating quality to Rosalía's voice that pulls the listener into its tornado. Even when she's breaking hearts apart, you nevertheless want to be alongside her for the ride.

A Signature Example of Joy

That exuberant energy comes forth clearly on the stunning Italian song about a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy for several minutes. Then, everything falls silent, and there's a spontaneous laugh followed by a declaration prior to a hilariously over-the-top string crescendo crashes in like comedic impact. The song immediately segues into the wild track driven by racing strings, an imposing choir, and a cameo appearance from the artist herself.

"The charm with this album lies in the listener never exactly know—nor wish to predict—what you is going to next."

Almost every track ends in a totally distinct place than how it began. A track explores the fleeting nature of fame over a delicate symphony only to disintegrating in electronic cacophony. Another, a cut echoing her earlier rhythmic style starts off dark and brooding, with prowling beats, before fluttering traditional rhythms and a heavenly choir enter to soften the song's rough edges.

The Bridge Of Experiment & Accessibility

A key achievement of the album involves straddling the gap of bold experimentation and broad appeal. It is no coincidence that it has achieved her highest-charting release to crack the Top 5 of major charts: at its core a collection of truly undeniable pop songs. A song sung entirely in English swells around a chorus that feels to collect more and more infectious melodies as it spins skyward. That feat is echoed on another expansive track that expands and constricts, intertwining layered melodies like a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with cultural honesty of other breakup anthems, lambasting a former lover labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Across the album, the singing have a painted-on edge, like a storybook character concealing a blade: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You have won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

This album represents pop on a maximalist level, an ambitious grasp for capital-A artistry amid of looming AI-generated sameness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, creating an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully manages its own built-in ridiculousness. This is an abundant well of hidden gems that takes patience to fully explore but doesn't seem like hard work. While other major releases of 2025 seemed like feasting on scraps, this record offers a lavish feast at which the guests around it, some tipsy on holy drink, flutter from conversations about ancient saints, the profound feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and shared gossip about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from music's most endlessly inventive practitioner.
