Line of Duty Announced for Seventh Series on the British Broadcaster
The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh season, confirmed by the BBC.
A brand new six-part series created by the show's creator starts production in Belfast in the coming months, according to the network.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."
The last season concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.
New Challenges for AC-12
The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.
Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle corruption within the police force.
Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."
Fresh Face and Intricate Plot
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a offender.
However, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.
Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."
"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
Actor Responses
Martin Compston described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.
Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."
"Pleased with the news and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."
Series Legacy
Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Stephen Graham.
Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.
The finale of series six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
