British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the influential style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the pastel suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
This news arrives shortly after he debuted his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by looks from model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as various looks for her American tour following her marriage.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
